As in all classes, in Room 34 we have a few routines that help keep our class running smoothly. I'll explain these at our Open House in August, but they'll also be posted here on our class website for your reference. Please feel free to email me or call with any questions you may have.

Friday Folders
One of our weekly routines involves our Friday Folder. Every Friday, your child will bring home a Friday Folder which will contain classroom work, art work, a lunch envelope, take-home books, Scholastic News, monthly menu and messages or news from the principal, PTC or me as needed.

Please return the folder on Monday with the lunch envelope (if you are purchasing lunches), any permission slips or forms, as well as any messages or letters you may have for me.

If the Friday Folder is lost or damaged, please send in a replacement. Thank you for your cooperation!

Homework
In order to facilitate the various homework assignments that are a part of our EveryDay Math program, I'll be sending the weekly homework each Friday in the Friday Folder. It will not be due back until the following Wednesday. This is a great opportunity for you to see what we've been doing in class. All homework assignments are a review.

Please make sure that your child returns the assignment by the following Wednesday. Your help and cooperation in assisting your child with homework is vital. Thank you for your assistance and support.

Take-Home Books
Beginning in October, your child will be bringing home a weekly Take-Home book. The Take-Home books are books that we've read in class. When your child brings the book home, please encourage him to read it to you. Then sign the back of the book and send it back to school. I'll put a special sticker on the book. Your child gets to keep all of these books, which is a great way to start a personal library at home. It might help to find a special place in your home to store these books.

Instant Word Practice Books
In October the children will take home the first of the Instant Word practice books. Each book has 100 words with 10 words on a page. Please practice reading one or two pages with your child. I will set aside time every Wednesday morning to go over the words with each child. When your child can instantly read all 10 words on a page, I'll put a sticker on the page and he/she can move on to the next list of 10 words. I always tell the children that the best place to keep this book is in their backpack because the backpack travels from school to home everyday. After practicing the words, please return the book to your child's backpack.

Why learn instant words? Click here to find out.

Snacktime
In the first grade we have a daily snack time (10 minutes). You will need to send in a healthy snack and drink for your child each day. A snack can be purchased from the cafeteria in the morning before 9 AM, however, in most cases, it is easier to bring one in from home.
