Literacy Begins at Home
A Letter To Parents

For literacy instruction in the classroom I use a research based literacy framework called Four Blocks.

The Four Blocks Model is a multi-level framework for reading and writing instruction developed by Pat Cunningham and Dottie Hall of Wake Forest University and utilized by thousands elementary classrooms across the country and abroad. The framework incorporates, on a daily basis, four different basic approaches to the teaching of reading: Guided Reading/Comprehension, Self-Selected Reading, Writing and Working With Words. Doing all Four Blocks everyday provides instruction to meet the needs and learning levels of each child.

These sites contain useful Four Blocks information
and include many resources for teachers.
